General Description:

Participants will learn pertinent sources for tax research and cost-effective and time-effective research techniques and be introduced to the various online services that are available.

Learning Objectives:

After completing this course the participant will be able to:

  • Determine whether there is substantial authority to take a return position.
  • Accurately cite cases and IRS documents.
  • Distinguish between primary and secondary authority.
  • Determine the relative weight of different authority.
  • Use online research tools to locate documents.

Instructors:

Erin H. Stearns is director of the Low Income Taxpayer Clinic and associate professor of the practice of taxation at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law. She teaches Tax Research and Writing and Civil and Criminal Tax Procedure in the Graduate Tax Program. She received a B.A. from Colorado College, J.D. from Northeastern University School of Law, master’s degree in public health from Tufts University, and LL.M. in taxation from the University of Denver Graduate Tax Program. She has advised clients on tax resolution and litigation, complex estate planning, estate and trust administration, and management of tax-exempt organizations. She recently formed Stearns Tax Consulting, LLC and advises other practitioners and clients on a variety of tax resolution and research matters.
