General Description:

This course will review the newly enacted federal Opportunity Zone program that provides a federal tax incentive to invest in low-income urban and rural communities through favorable treatment of reinvested capital gains and forgiveness of tax on new capital gains.

Learning Objectives:

After completing this course the participant will be able to:

  • Summarize the core principles of investments into opportunity zone funds based on the new Code section and regulations.
  • Describe which gains qualify and which taxpayers are eligible to invest.
  • List the three main tax incentives for investors and the requirements to invest.
  • Describe the five-year, seven-year, and ten-year tax benefits and associated elections.
  • Define an Opportunity Fund and the requirements associated with Opportunity Funds.
  • Recognize taxpayers that have a higher propensity to invest in Opportunity Funds.
  • Identify assets that qualify as Opportunity Zone assets.
  • Recognize issues that are not addressed in the Code and regulations.

Instructors:

Joe Monty, CPA, MT, is a partner with Eide Bailly, LLP. He has more than 10 years of public accounting experience providing tax services to a variety of industries including real estate, dealerships, manufacturing, agriculture, medical, and oil and gas. He has extensive experience serving middle to large market clients and previous experience with an international Big 4 professional services firm. He focuses his practice on identifying tax solutions for partnership, corporate, trust, and individual taxpayers.


Jason Inglis is managing partner of ReDefine Capital Partners. He is an accomplished senior executive with extensive experience and a proven track record within the financial services industry. He has a comprehensive knowledge in structuring, positioning, analyzing, selling, and marketing mutual funds, separately managed accounts, ETFs, closed-end funds, hedge funds, private placements, and other alternative investments. Prior to founding the ReDefine family of companies, he held executive roles with Angel Oak Capital Partners, Deutsche Bank AG, Envestnet, and BNY Mellon.
